During the early history of Arizona, this area was well known as Long Valley. Due to the East and West Clear Creek on both sides of Long Valley, it was the only way to get over the Mogollon Rim from Winslow to the Strawberry, Pine, Payson, and Phoenix areas. West Clear Creek flows south and empties into the big Colorado River.

Before 1947 the area known as Long Valley was a weekend gathering place for a rodeo and dance, which was sponsored by the Fuller family at their ranch. This was a regular happening for about 30 years. In the early 1900's, the Forest Service established the Long Valley Ranger Station. There were not many people working at the Ranger Station and during the winter months it was not in force, as the residents left the area with exception of the Fuller family. Sometime later the Hoke family opened asmall gas station and grocery store at Clints Well. Clints Well was dug during the early 1900's and was a main water supply for people using the area and for those traveling through. The area was heavily used for camping, fishing and hunting.

During the 1920's, 30's and 40's, Arizona logging industry was centered on Williams, the Grand Canyon, and Flagstaff. When the demand for more lumber became evident, the logging operation moved to Barney Pasture, Mormon Lake, and Sheep Springs. The road conditions made it difficult for the men working in the logging camps to travel home each night so logging camps were built along with portable housing. This enabled families to stay during the working months. The buildings were built on skids to facilitate the moving from one logging camp to another. As more families move into the area, a post office was established. An unused railroad was revitalized so that the logs could be moved from the camps to Flagstaff. Twenty miles east of Mormon Lake at Allen Lake was the end of the railroad. In 1947, Southwest forest Industries was established as a permanent logging camp, as water was available from a natural spring enabling a deep well to be drilled. This new camp was called Happy Jack. It was never really determined whether the name Happy Jack came from the "Lumber Jacks" or from the happy go lucky fellow who was one of the employees. His luck did not hold, however, as he was killed while employed in the area. Happy Jack Post Office was established as a branch of the Flagstaff main office.... As the influx of people came, over a 35 mile radius, the entire area became known as Happy Jack, in spit of the fact that there was still Long Valley, Clint's Well, Blue Ridge, and Clear Creek Pines. Happy Jack Post Office serviced all.

In the later part of the 1940's and 50's, logging camp of Happy Jack was established and in as much as the Forest Service personnel dealt with the logging industry, a decision was made to move Long Valley to Happy Jack.

Therefore the Forest Service Station and logging camp were at the same site, but with a Happy Jack address, and it did not take too long until the Long Valley Ranger Station became known as Happy Jack Ranger Station.

In the early 1960's, a residential development was established and was called Clear Creek Pines, but again with Happy Jack mailing address. Also, Blue Ridge Ranger Station was established, adding more to the confusion. In the early 1975, Southwest Forest Industries moved their logging camp, Happy Jack, to another location on their own land, which was known as Last Chance Mine. This was near the junction of Highway 87 and the Forest Highway 3. This is called Happy Jack, Too. Confusion reigned. However, the Post Office accepted the new location, leaving the same name and zip code. In the later part of 1977, the telephone lines were completed and to add to the confusion, Arizona Telephone Company named this exchange Blue Ridge. We now had Long Valley, Clint's Well, Happy Jack Too, Clear Creek Pines, and Blue Ridge.

In December of 1983, the Happy Jack Post Office was again moved from Happy Jack location to now present location at Long Valley, but the Happy Jack Post Office prevailed. On the Highway maps, one sees that Happy Jack is 15 miles north from Long Valley on the Forest Highway 3, but the Post Office, is on Highway 87 at Long Valley. Along with the Post Office, there is a convenience market, service station, trailer park, garage, cafe and Forest Service information office "The Mall". Within 30-mile radius of Happy Jack Too there are seven wonderful fishing lakes and reservoirs where there are trout, bass, pike, perch, blue gill, and catfish. Whatever the season, there is camping, fishing, hunting, and in the winter, the snow sports of cross country skiing, tubing, and snowmobiling prevail. This area is 99% National Forest and is available to the public. This area is a very popular hunting area for elk, deer, turkey, mountain lion, bear, and antelope, and is situated at hunting areas 5A, 5B, and 6A. For the nature lovers, we are located within the longest, continuous stand of Ponderosa Pines in the world.
